What vaccines should I get before traveling to Brazil?

Prior to your trip to Brazil, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following travel vaccines: Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Rabies, and Typhoid. Note that rabies vaccine is recommended only for those travelers that will be performing outdoors activities, such as camping or hiking. Also, it is recommended for travelers that will have contact with animals in Brazil.

 

Is it required to get all recommended vaccines to Brazil?

Yellow fever is the only vaccine that is required. All other recommended vaccines are given to protect the traveler from diseases and illnesses present in Brazil. 

 

What about Malaria prevention?

Whether you need malaria prevention medication or not depends on which area of Brazil you will be traveling. Although there is no vaccine available to prevent malaria, our doctor can prescribe preventive antimalarial medication, if it is determined during the travel consultation that you are traveling to an at-risk area in Brazil.

 

How far ahead of my trip should I get vaccinated?

It is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to get vaccinated for Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, and Rabies at least two weeks prior to traveling to Brazil. Plan ahead for your trip, but you should still schedule a travel consultation for last-minute trips, as some vaccines can still be given and provide you with immunization right before your travel date.

 

What other things do I need besides vaccines?

Aside from vaccines, there is also medication available that we can provide you with to prevent or treat traveler’s diarrhea, motion sickness, altitude sickness, jet lag, etc.

What should I expect during my travel consultation?

During your travel consultation, our board certified doctor will discuss the recommended vaccines for your trip.  A thorough review of your immunization record will be done to determine which vaccines you have had and which ones you will need. A discussion of your itinerary and planned activities will take place to decide what other health precautions you may need. In the end, you will be given your necessary vaccines and other travel prescriptions needed for a healthy trip.

 

Will my health insurance cover Brazil travel vaccinations?

No. Health insurances feel that traveling is a personal choice and not a medical necessity; therefore any travel immunization should be the traveler’s responsibility. Under certain circumstances, your insurer may cover for certain preventive medications (antimalarial or diarrhea medicine).  As a result, our travel clinic provides travelers with affordable immunizations they will need for a healthy trip, while helping them stay within their budget.
