FAQ
How do I know what vaccines I need for Kenya?
The Travel Clinic NYC recommends vaccines for Kenya based on guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Kenya travelers can avoid and minimize their health risks by getting the following vaccines: hepatitis A and B, typhoid, meningitis, rabies, yellow fever, as well as being up-to-date with routine vaccinations such as, MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella), tetanus (Tdap), and polio. In addition to immunization shots, travelers should get protection against malaria.
Are all vaccinations necessary for my trip?
Travelers oftentimes get confused with the vast amount of information about vaccination requirements. For this very reason, it is vital for every traveler to get a pre-travel consultation and get what is absolutely necessary for a healthy and budget-wise trip. At our clinic you will be guided through the required, recommended, and routine vaccines you might need for Kenya based on your itinerary, health status, and planned activities. Every consultation is customized to our patients’ needs and budget. As of today, the only vaccine that is required for Kenya is yellow fever, with proof of immunization being a requirement before entry to the country. All other Kenya vaccinations are recommendations, but be aware that not receiving proper immunization before traveling is as dangerous as driving without a seat belt.
What can I do about malaria?
The risk for malaria infection is present throughout all of Kenya with Nairobi being the exception. It is a life threatening disease that can be easily transmitted through a simple mosquito bite. Currently, no vaccination exists against malaria, but protection medication can be taken to do so. Our center provides complimentary antimalarial prescription drugs to Kenya travelers during their consultation visit, as well as advice on basic protective measures to minimize malaria infection while abroad.
How long before traveling do I get vaccinated to become immunized?
Ideally, it is recommended to get all travel vaccinations two to four weeks prior to your departure date. Our bodies need enough time to develop the necessary antibodies from each vaccine. In addition, some vaccines are given as part of an interval series (i.e. Rabies and Japanese encephalitis), therefore you should schedule a travel consultation appointment as soon as you decide to travel to ensure you have all the protection you need. If you are running out of time and close to your departure date, not all hope is lost because vaccines can still be given and provide the traveler a degree of protection- some is always better than none.
What other precautions should I take for travel?
Aside from vaccines, travelers should be aware of the health risks they might be exposed while away in a foreign country. Traveler diseases such as motion sickness, altitude sickness, diarrhea, and malaria infection can be easily prevented and treated with prescription medication. You will receive complimentary prescriptions during your initial consultation . You should note that prescriptions such as atimalarial drugs might not be covered by your insurance, as this medication is taken by travelers and traveling is considered a leisure activity and not a medical necessity.

How much do travel vaccinations cost?

Our office will do everything we can to provide you with the necessary documentation (vaccine and office visit codes) in order for you to attempt to obtain reimbursement from your insurance. There is an initial fee of $65 for the office visit and consultation. This fee will also cover all necessary travel prescriptions for your trip to Kenya.
