FAQ
Do I need vaccines to travel to Thailand?
Whenever you are traveling to a foreign location, you should look into the vaccination requirements for that country. In accordance to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we advise our patients traveling to Thailand to get the following vaccines: hepatitis A and B, typhoid, japanese encephalitis, rabies, and have all their routine immunizations (MMR, tetanus, and polio) updated. Preventive medication should also be taken for malaria.
Do I need to get vaccinated at all when traveling?
Immunization is a crucial part of the traveling planning process. Never travel unprotected. Even though there are many vaccines that are recommended for those traveling to Thailand, not all of them are necessary. Our Travel Clinic NYC doctor will evaluate which vaccinations will benefit you depending upon your destination (s), past vaccination history, former and current medical conditions, length of stay, and the nature of your trip (business, work, or pleasure). Every consultation is customized to the patient’s itinerary.
What protection is available against malaria?
Unlike other diseases, malaria protection cannot be obtained with a vaccine, as it currently does not exist. However, antimalarial drugs can be prescribed, typically antibiotics, in order to receive the necessary protection while visiting infected areas of Thailand. Travelers are also advised to bring mosquito repellants to avoid bites from infected mosquitoes and maximize their protection efforts against malaria.
When should my immunization for travel start?
Travelers are advised to start their immunization schedule two to four weeks prior to departure. During this time period you will be able to develop full immunity from each vaccine against the diseases. The earlier you get your vaccinations the better, especially because some vaccines (i.e. rabies and Japanese encephalitis) require a series of shots given at a specific interval. Even if you are a week or just days away from traveling, contact us because some vaccines become effective immediately or shortly after they are administered. Also, there are accelerated schedules for certain vaccinations, which will allow you to obtain much needed protection.
What other health safety measures can I take before going abroad?
Although travel immunization vaccines are very important in the planning process, they are not everything. You should be aware of other traveling conditions your body might experience while visiting a foreign country. One may enjoy the local food and drinks, but it can also put you at risk of ingesting contaminated food or water, which will lead you to diarrhea. You might suffer from motion or altitude sickness on your way to Thailand or jet lag upon arriving. You can prevent and treat these common conditions with appropriate medication that can be given to you during your visit to our clinic.
Where can I obtain travel vaccines?

What are the costs involved with Thailand travel vaccination?
As with other travel clinics, we do not participate with health insurances for any travel-related visits. Everything from the consultation to the vaccination process will be an out-of-pocket expense. Keeping in mind this issue, we strive to maintain all of our services at reasonable prices. The initial visit and consultation fee is $65 and this will include all written prescriptions for the trip. However, all vaccines carry an additional fee. We will provide all our patients a detailed receipt with vaccine codes for future claim submission to their insurance.
