FAQ

Are there specific vaccinations for travelers to Vietnam?

Yes. While traveling, you might encounter infectious diseases that might not be present in the US, but are in Vietnam and when contracted, it will definitely put a damper on your experience abroad. The vaccines that are recommended for Vietnam are: hepatitis A and B, japanese encephalitis, typhoid, and rabies. Booster shots for routine immunizations such as MMR (measles/mumps/rubella), tetanus, and polio are suggested depending on the traveler’s destination and activities.

Why should I get travel shots before going abroad?

Everyone traveling to a foreign destination should take all preventive measures to protect their health from infectious diseases that can potentially be life-threatening when contracted. Most, if not all, traveling diseases present in Vietnam are easily preventable with vaccines or medication. There is no good reason to put your health at risk when there is an easy and safe way to prevent these illnesses from happening.  Vaccines are a sound and long-term investment on your health.  The New York City Travel Clinic  will prepare you before your trip so you can prevent and manage any illnesses while away from home.

Will I need anti-malaria pills for my trip?

Depending the region (s), duration of trip, and season of the year, that you will be visiting while in Vietnam, you might be required to take antimalarial medication to prevent infection. Malaria is a preventable and treatable infection, as long as it’s diagnosed and treated early. Aside from medication, you can always take personal preventive measures such as using mosquito repellants and wearing protective clothing.

What is the appropriate Vietnam schedule?

It is never too early or too late to get vaccination before traveling.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting all immunizations done two to four weeks before departure date. Although some vaccinations can become effective immediately or in a matter of days, others require longer period of times, as well as additional shots (series).  There are some vaccines that can be given on an accelerated schedule (i.e. rabies and hepatitis B). Even if you are traveling in a day or two, do no hesitate to visit the our clinic because we can still provide you with useful last-minute advice and prescription medications that will minimize your health risks when abroad.

Besides vaccinations, what else do I need prior traveling?

Besides vaccinations, travelers at our clinic will be given prescription medications to treat malaria and common traveler’s conditions such as diarrhea, motion and altitude sickness, and jet lag.  Unlike other clinics, all of these prescriptions will be complimentary during your initial consultation.

Where can I find certified Vietnam travel immunization?

At the Travel Clinic of Manhattan, we will provide you with complete and a wide range of services and immunization that will meet all your travel needs. A board certified doctor specializing in travel medicine will head the consultation and administer the vaccinations. Every consultation is thorough and personalized to our patient’s particular traveling needs. Extensive and careful review of your immunization history, past and present medical history, itinerary, and length of stay will allow us to determine the specific vaccines you will need.

What vaccine expenses should I expect?

Unfortunately, insurances do not cover travel care and immunizations, thus you will be responsible for the cost of the visit, as well as the fees for the vaccinations you get. You will be given an itemized receipt for your visit and vaccines with codes that you will need, if you are planning to submit these expenses for reimbursement by your insurance. A travel consultation carries a $65 fee, which will also include any written prescription medication you may need. All other vaccines are priced separately. Along with the recommended vaccinations and travel consultation health information, you will be given the necessary tools that will protect and maintain your health when traveling away.
