  • What the $90 covers: the doctor's review of your trip and any prescriptions sent to your pharmacy.
  • Payment: cash, debit and FSA/HSA cards pay the listed prices. By credit card, the visit fee is $93.15, and the vaccines are $93.15 (Tdap), $124.20 (MMR), $258.75 (varicella) and $82.80 (polio) per dose, which includes a 3.5% card fee. We don't accept checks or Zelle.

Tdap · Tetanus

Do Adults Need a Tdap Booster?

Yes. The CDC recommends a tetanus booster every 10 years for all adults. The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough (pertussis).

If you've never had a Tdap shot at age 10 or older, your next booster should be Tdap. After that, either Tdap or Td (the tetanus-diphtheria shot) counts. You don't need to be traveling: we give the Tdap shot to anyone due for a tetanus booster.

How Long Does a Tetanus Shot Last?

About 10 years. A dirty or major wound can mean you need a shot sooner.

Tetanus Shot After a Cut or Wound

When you need a tetanus shot after a cut depends on the wound and on your last shot:

Clean, minor cut

You need a shot if your last one was 10 or more years ago.

Dirty or major wound

You need a shot if your last one was 5 or more years ago.

We give the Tdap shot only. We don't treat the wound itself.

MMR · Measles, mumps, rubella

Do Adults Need an MMR Booster for Travel?

It depends on your records. The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps and rubella. The CDC recommends at least one documented dose for adults, and two doses for anyone traveling abroad, given 28 days apart and finished at least 2 weeks before you leave.

Born before 1957

You count as immune to measles.

Two documented doses

You're fully vaccinated for travel.

One dose or no record

Get your second dose, or two doses 28 days apart.

Vaccinated as a child? Two doses are 97% effective at preventing measles, one dose 93%, and most people are protected for life.

Varicella · Chickenpox

Do I Need the Varicella Vaccine as an Adult?

Only if you aren't already immune to chickenpox. Being born in the US before 1980 counts as immune, unless you work in healthcare, are pregnant or have a weakened immune system. Adults who have never had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine need the varicella vaccine.

Varicella (Varivax) Vaccine Schedule

Two doses, 4 to 8 weeks apart. Got only one dose years ago? You need just the second one, and you don't start over. Two doses are about 90% effective at preventing chickenpox, and most people are protected for life.

Polio

Do I Need a Polio Booster for Travel?

It depends on where you're going. Adults heading to a country where polio still spreads should be fully vaccinated before they leave. The CDC lists 34 destinations, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt and Indonesia. The list changes, so ask us about your destination when you book.

  • Had the full childhood series: you may get one polio booster, once in your life.
  • Never vaccinated: you need 3 doses. The second comes 1 to 2 months after the first, and the third 6 to 12 months after the second.
  • Leaving soon: a faster schedule fits the doses closer together. If you leave in less than 4 weeks, you get one dose before you go.

We use IPOL, the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV). It's a shot, and it's the only polio vaccine given in the US since 2000.

Polio Vaccine on Your Yellow Card (Pakistan and Afghanistan)

Pakistan and Afghanistan, where wild polio still spreads, may ask you to show proof of a polio dose when you leave if you stayed more than 4 weeks. The dose has to be given 4 weeks to 12 months before your departure date. We record your polio dose on your yellow card, the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis.

MMR · Varicella · Polio

Not Sure If You're Immune? A Blood Test Can Tell

For MMR, varicella and polio, you don't have to guess. We can send you for a titer test, a blood test that shows whether you're already immune to measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox and polio. The doctor reads your results and tells you whether you need a shot, a booster or nothing at all. The lab bills you for the test separately.

Can I Get Tdap or MMR at CVS or Walgreens?

Yes. Pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens give these vaccines too, and many insurance plans cover them there. Here's what a visit with Travel Clinic NY adds:

  • Every traveler is seen by a doctor, not a PA or nurse practitioner.
  • All four vaccines in stock in our office, along with typhoid, yellow fever and other travel vaccines.
  • Your polio dose recorded on your yellow card.
  • Malaria, altitude sickness and traveler's diarrhea prescriptions handled in the same visit.
  • Every price on this page, before you book.

What Happens at Your Vaccine Visit?

  1. Bring your vaccine records if you have them, even old ones. The doctor tells you which shots you need, and we advise only the vaccines your trip needs, nothing more.
  2. We give your shots. Need another dose? Come back on the date your schedule calls for.

No appointment? Walk-ins are welcome during office hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get these vaccines on the same day as my yellow fever vaccine?

Yes. Tdap and polio can go with any other vaccine, on any day. MMR and varicella can be given on the same day as each other or as yellow fever, or at least 4 weeks apart. If you have a month before your trip, the CDC prefers MMR and yellow fever a month apart. Need the yellow fever vaccine too? We give it at the same visit.

Who should not get the MMR or varicella vaccine?

Wait if you are or may be pregnant, and get these vaccines after the pregnancy. If you have a weakened immune system from an illness such as HIV or from medical treatment, tell the doctor before your shot.

Will insurance cover these vaccines?

We give you the paperwork to ask your insurer to pay you back. Only some insurers do, so check with yours.

What are the side effects?

Most are mild: soreness, redness or swelling where the shot was given, or a mild fever. Tdap can also cause a headache or tiredness, and MMR and varicella can cause a mild rash.

What if I don't know when I had my last tetanus shot?

If you have a cut or wound, get a shot. The CDC advises one after any wound when you don't know when your last tetanus shot was.

Do you give flu, COVID or shingles vaccines?

No. We focus on travel vaccines and travel prescriptions, so for flu, COVID or shingles shots, see your own doctor or a pharmacy.
